While the weapon never reach full production and only a few were made, the weapon is still quite interesting. The ARES FMG was designed as a compact weapon with the firepower of a submachine gun yet can folded up to take about the same volume as a folded up cigarette carton. It is designed to be able to be concealed under clothing and be able to be rapidly unfolded and be brought into action. With practice, the weapon can be opened in two or three seconds and be ready to fire.
The ARES FMG can be described as consisting of two shells. The first shell contains the barrel and bolt assembly. The second folds over the first and when unfolded acts as the weapons butt stock. The magazine is within the handgrip and is attached to the casing containing the barrel. It folds into the space between the two shells. There is a simple cocking handle below the weapon's muzzle. The weapon is of all metal construction although during development it was anticipated that composite materials would be used in later models resulting in a lighter weight weapon.
The weapon can use 20 and 32 round magazines. The weapon can be carried in the folded configuration with a loaded 20 round magazine but cannot be folded with a 32 round magazine.
